Duncan Cross Country Spotlight – Ava Miller – Presented by Bank of Commerce

Duncan sophomore Ava Miller started running cross country in the seventh grade and was initially inspired to start running because of her mother’s influence. Miller said that her mom had run half marathons before and it inspired her to take an interest in the sport. Miller quickly realized that she, like her mom, enjoyed the act of running and wanted to take it more seriously.

This year Miller has enjoyed her season. She set a goal of breaking a sub 21 minute 5K time and has been working hard to improve her time and pacing to accomplish this goal. Miller has learned over the past few years some of the key traits required to be successful at cross country.

“I think you need patience because running faster and faster takes a lot of time and won’t happen overnight,” Miller said. “I also think you need dedication because you need to train everyday so you can get better and better.”

Miller appreciates everything her mom and family has done to provide for her thus far in her young career.

“My mom really inspires me to run,” Miller said. “I love that she has all these running memories and I’m happy that I’m getting to make some running memories as well.”

While Miller is only a sophomore she has some encouraging words for anyone else who might be thinking about taking up cross country or getting into endurance sports but might be hesitant to do so. Miller has learned a few tricks that she applies herself when it’s time to race.

“I would say don’t put too much pressure on yourself because progress takes time,” Miller said. “Just enjoy the races because they’re your chance to show off.”

After high school Miller wants to continue her education by going to college where she wants to work toward becoming a surgeon. Just like competing in cross country she knows it will take time and every step forward is another step toward accomplishing that goal.
