Hammon’s Harlee Benkley – Chickasha Area Hometown Hero 2022 – Presented By Farm Credit of Western OK

This fall, Harlee Benkley will be a senior at Hammon High School, where she plays basketball as well as fast and slow-pitch softball. She has been active in athletics since the elementary years and her favorite of the two sports is basketball.

“The excitement I feel on the ball court just can’t be beat,” said Harlee. “This year I got to play point guard and bringing the ball down the court for my team was the best thing ever.”

Outside of athletics, Harlee is involved in FFA, FCA, her church and community. Although the last two years has limited her usual involvements, she would help with the town clean-up, visit local nursing homes, and help deliver Thanksgiving and Christmas boxes with her church.

“I think it’s important to be involved in my community because my community does so much for me,” she said. “Our community is the best to support us in the stands and they give to our athletic funds which pay for our basketball shoes, jerseys, meals when we go out, and so much more. They also support our FFA program and all the other activities in our school. They are really the best!”

When it comes to role models, Harlee says two come to mind.

“When I was younger I really looked up to Morgan Miller, who was a high schooler when I was in junior high. She was so selfless when she played and looked out for others on and off the court. I still want to be like her as a player on the court and the ballfield,” she said. “In my personal life I look up to my Papa. He is definitely a good man and is such a good example for my four sisters and me. He is a hard worker and is very active in our church and the community. He is definitely my role model and helps me with anything I need.”

Harlee’s family is proud of her in and out of school.

“She is the type of person that always is a giver whether on the softball field, basketball court or church activities – she is always the one that gives of herself whatever it takes to get it done and many times without any thanks or awards at all,” said Kerry Archer, Harlee’s grandparent.

“Harlee is the most humble, kind-hearted young lady you’ll meet,” said her mother, Loralee. “She is wise beyond her years and knows the value of hard work. She’s a key part of her athletic teams, putting in countless hours of practice, yet still maintains a 4.0 GPA. Harlee has a servant’s heart and loves to serve the Lord, her teammates and her community. Her kindness, work ethic, integrity and humbleness are what set her apart. I am beyond proud that God chose me to be her mom.”

After high school Harlee plans to attend SWOSU and eventually transfer to OU to fulfill her dream of becoming a pediatrician.
