Hollis’ Zach Mefford – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Cattlemens Bank

By Derrick Smith

Everyone has a  dream of something they want to do with their life. While some may be big and extravagant hopes, others may be a little more down to Earth. Either way, it is a type of goal for the person and they do what they can to reach it. Hollis’ Zach Mefford is a multisport athlete and he says that continuing his career is what drives him and keeps him working.

“The possibility of taking the next step in my baseball career and playing at the collegiate level is what motivates me,” he said. “That has always been a dream of mine and something that I am continually working towards. There are no shortcuts. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Success in baseball means everyone doing their job, so I try my best to do mine.”

Medford is a senior at Hollis High School, where he is a member of the football, basketball, and baseball teams. Throughout his life, he has had some great role models, but he says that there are a few people that have made the biggest impact.

“Some of the biggest influences in my life would have to be my parents and coaches that I’ve had over the years,” Mefford stated. “They have pushed me to be the best person/player I can be every step of the way and I am truly thankful for that.”

Throughout his career, Zach has played alongside and competed against the same players for most of that time. He says that knowing the opponent has made winning more fun.

“It’s always fun to beat the guys I know from around this area,” he said. “We have been playing against some of these teams for over fourteen years and it always feels good to get wins against them. On our teams, my classmates and I are going to be the leaders this next year, and we all know what it is going to take to win as a team and how we plan on getting our goals accomplished.”

Along with athletics, Zach is a member of the Future Farmers of America and the National Honor Society. He is also taking concurrent classes at Western Oklahoma State College.
