Elk City’s Matti Jones – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Paul Jones Drug

Matti Jones is a senior at Elk City High School, competing on the Elks cross country, basketball, and track and field teams. Jones has been a top runner on the Elks cross country team and would be a four-time state qualifier if not for an ACL injury that sidelined her during her junior season. In basketball, Jones is the primary ball handler at the point guard position and prides herself on setting the tempo for the Elk City offense. The Elks were district champions the past three seasons, finishing with a 16-11 record this season and making it to the area tournament.

Jones competes in four track and field events during the spring season. She’s on three relay teams (4×100, 4×200, and 4×400) and is a pole vaulter.

“Matti is our vocal leader as well as leading by example through her work ethic and maturity,” coach Andy Peffer said. “She is an accomplished pole vaulter and will also be running on our best relay teams.”

As a pole vaulter, Jones placed 6th at the Class 4A state championship meet her freshman year. This season, Jones placed 7th at regionals in pole vaulting with a height of 8-feet, 6 inches, which seeds her for the 8th best regional score in 4A.

Outside of athletics, Jones is involved in student council, key club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She has also been a member of the school choir all four years of high school.

“We’ve got sweepstakes every year since I’ve been in high school,” Jones said. “My mother and aunt got singing lessons when they were younger, so I did as well. I tried out choir and was involved in all my school musicals. I’ve loved it ever since.”

Jones cares about her health and fitness and enjoys helping others as well. In the summertime, she helps train other Elk City athletes during the girl’s summer pride in the offseason. Upon graduation, Jones plans to attend Southwestern Oklahoma State University and major in kinesiology.
